Fish Tank People. I Need Some Help.

So this is my old 5 gallon fish tank.  It started about 10 years ago when our daughter won a goldfish at a birthday party.  It came in this little bowl so I decided to go out and get a small fish tank for it to live in.  The fish is long gone (we don't flush them in our house...some people are afraid they will come back to life at the wrong time)

I liked the tank but it is very small I've grown very tired of cleaning all the fake plants & stuff.  Also the tank was just sitting on a table and didn't look that great.  I was ready to give up the fish life but instead decided it would be cool to have a good looking tank with it's own stand etc.   My family got me this early birthday gift.  It's 20 gallons has a stand and really looks pretty good in the house.  You can't really tell from the pictures but the new one is a lot bigger.

I'm not completely done with it but have added the bubble bar at the back, a few new fish and some live plants that I don't have to clean.  Still looking for some different rocks and stuff.

Now I have an issue.  See below

Yesterday I went to the pet store to get some more live plants.  I had the 2 green ones and I wanted something taller with more color.  I saw the brown plant on the left.  It was the only one in the store so I grabbed it.  Now I'm wondering...did I just buy a dead plant?  The fish keep trying to eat it and under the lights it doesn't looks so alive.  What do you think?
