Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month is this month, and Going Gold doesn't get the attention it really deserves. Did you know that only 4% of the money raised through the National Cancer Institute goes towards children's cancer?
I found some ways that you can help, and certain things you can buy where the profits go towards helping kids with cancer.
Personally, I've bought a baseball cap and 2 headbands from Love Your Melon. I've been very happy with my purchases, AND 50% of the profits support the fight against pediatric cancer.
Down the street at Maggie's Gift Shop, they carry Chavez for Charity bracelets, and some of them benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand. It's a foundation that was started by a little girl named Alex who had neuroblastoma. She started her own lemonade stand to raise money, but unfortunately she passed away from cancer when she was just 8-years-old. Her parents have taken on the charity, and it's raised over $150 million.
Also at Maggie's, they carry a ton of Alex & Ani bracelets.... one of which is a unicorn bangle that benefits Children's Miracle Network.
And last but certainly not least.... our friends over at Twill do a ton for our community. With this company, when you buy a blanket from them, another blanket is donated to a charity. One of the charities they work closely with is Albany Medical Center, where 194 blankets have been given so far.
Of course you can always donate directly to the Melodies Center at Albany Medical Center, where the amazing humans that are the Child Life Specialists work. They help children with cancer and other blood disorders, and they really are angels on earth (Angie and all of those who work there will try to be humble and tell you otherwise... but really, that's what they are).
