February 1st kicks off Black History Month and to celebrate this month of rich history Google has featured famed African American artist Edmonia Lewis.

Lewis grew up right here in the Capital Region in Greenbush, NY in 1844. She spent much of her life overseas and gained international fame for her sculptures. She was the first woman of African American and Native American decent to do so.

She died in London in 1907 at the age of 63.
