Rick Nelson made a promise to walk his daughter, Rachel, down the aisle at her wedding, and even a heart attack didn’t stop him from keeping it. Just days before the nuptials, he started feeling chest pains, and a trip to the hospital confirmed he had severe blockage. He started on blood thinners and open-heart surgery was scheduled as soon as possible - June 4th, just two days before the wedding.
Before his quadruple bypass, the Ohio dad told his surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus: “My daughter, Rachel, is getting married Saturday. I have to be there.” After the successful surgery, Rick was recovering in the intensive care unit, while staffers from different departments came together to coordinate a venue change for the wedding, moving it to the hospital rooftop so he could make good on his promise.
The father of the bride was dressed in a tux and safely taken to the new destination, where hospital workers made sure everything ran smoothly. “It's hard to put into words what this meant to us,” Rick’s wife Gail says. “Everyone went above and beyond.” Rick is now at home resting and recovering and says being a part of his daughter’s special day “meant the world” to him.
