The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Albany and surrounding areas, effective from 5 p.m. today (March 5) until noon tomorrow. This marks the second advisory this week, as Capital Region residents brace for another challenging evening commute.

The advisory warns of precipitation beginning as rain this afternoon, which will transition into a mix of sleet, freezing rain, and snow, particularly in northern areas. According to the Times Union, up to 2 inches of snow and sleet, along with 1/10 to 1/4 of an inch of ice, are expected. The highest ice accumulation is anticipated in the Helderbergs and eastern Catskills.

Drivers should exercise caution, as slick road conditions are likely to impact the Friday morning commute. The NEWS10 ABC report suggests that temperatures will hover around freezing, potentially causing icy patches on untreated surfaces.

The weather service advises slowing down and using caution while traveling. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through real-time updates on school closings, road conditions, and flight delays. The latest alerts and forecasts are available on NewsRadio 103.1 / 810 WGY.

As the storm system is expected to move out by tomorrow, warmer temperatures are anticipated for the weekend, with highs reaching the mid-40s.
