Here's The Epic Trailer For Steven Spielberg's Remake Of 'West Side Story'

Tonight, tonight...you can watch the first full-length trailer for Steven Spielberg's remake of the classic Broadway musical West Side Story. The teaser shows Rachel Ziegler and Ansel Elgort take on the roles of Maria and Tony, two star-crossed lovers caught in the middle of a deadly gang rivalry between the Jets and Sharks.

While this new version of the musical is a remake of the 1961 film, the Hollywood Reporter notes that it's not a "shot-for-shot copy" of the original. Devoted fans will notice differences in some of the pivotal scenes, as well as new dialogue popping up in important moments.

Ziegler also reiterated that this version will be a unique take on the classic story while chatting with Town & Country. "We're not trying to recreate, frame for frame, the 1961 film. That film exists as this incredible piece of pop culture that everyone has seen and been affected by in some way. I don't think any of us would ever try to recreate that," she explained. "There are things to improve on and things to address. It's such a cultural phenomenon, that film and the musical in general."

"I think the way Steven and [screenwriter] Tony Kushner framed it to all of us when we were auditioning, when we were rehearsing, when we were shooting, was, 'We are making a movie of the original Broadway musical. This is our take on a story that everyone has heard, and knows so well, and really loves,' " she added.

In addition to Ziegler and Elgort, West Side Story features performances from Mike Faist, Corey Stoll, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Josh Andrés Rivera, and Brian d’Arcy James. Rita Moreno, who an Academy Award for her performance as Anita in the 1961 film, will also star in the remake.

West Side Story dances into theaters on December 10, just in time for the holidays.
