Before there was "Twilight" or "The Vampire Diaries" there was "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Buffy and the Scooby Gang took us to Sunnydale, CA from 1997-2003. Now after 15 years without the slayer, it looks like a reboot is in the works.
Deadline reports:
Midnight, Texas creator Monica Owusu-Breen has been tapped as writer, executive producer and showrunner of the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with the original series’ creator and showrunner Whedon set to executive produce alongside original series’ exec producers Gail Berman, Fran Kazui and Kaz Kazui as well as Joe Earley from Berman’s Jackal Group.
As a fan of the show there are certain things that I want to see. The cast is older, and I believe that the focus should be on a new cast and establishing them as the heroes of this new Buffy series, but it would be very important to include the original cast as mentor type characters.
Buffy should be the new Giles
Giles was Buffy's watcher, until he wasn't. While he was kicked out of the Watcher's Council he never left Buffy's side (well except for a little while to go to England). He was always her teacher and guardian. That role should now fall to Buffy Summers herself.
I really hope they can get Sarah Michelle Gellar to reprise her role in this fashion. In the final season they woke up every potential slayer in their big battle against the first evil. I can only assume that would continue as those potential slayers no doubt died, giving birth to new slayers. They'll need guidance, and who better to give it to them than Buffy? Maybe Faith? In fact, bring her in too.
Vampires are immortal, actors aren't
While we would al love to see Angel and Spike make their return to the show, I don't see it happening. Both David Boreanez (49) and James Marsters (55) look a good deal older than their immortal vampire characters. So perhaps you'll have to just write them off, or hear my solution.
Some sort of virus is causing vampires to age. So that would allow you to bring back Marsters as Spike. I don't think Boreanez would come back, he's super busy being on other TV shows.
Don't change the tone
The overall tone of Buffy is what drew so many of us to the show. While establishing a pretty cool mythology with the various demons and vampires, they never lost the tone of the show that got us watching it in the first place.
Don't take yourself so serious. The world is weird, and the people are weird too. Let's make sure we keep it that way. With Joss Whedon directly involved, I don't see that being a problem.
Overall, I think this reboot can work if they do some service to all of us fans who already enjoy the show. I like that they'll be expanding on the mythology that's already been established, because there's no need to start over. This was a great show with great characters. Much like Star Wars I think it's time to see what the next chapter holds for a new Scooby Gang.
