In a quirk of committees, both teams of Great Danes will face teams called Mountaineers. The men play Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers out of Maryland tonight (Tuesday). You can hear the game at 6:25 p.m. on Fox Sports 980. Rodger Wyland and Zach Bye have the call.
The UAlbany women’s basketball team is back in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season, winning the America East. Monday night, the Great Danes found out they had been seeded 15th in the “Louisville Bracket” and will face the #2-seed West Virginia Mountaineers.
They will play Sunday in Baton Rouge, LA on Sunday in the opening round.
“I was just happy when the put the first side of the bracket up and UConn came up and all those teams came up and we weren’t playing them,” UAlbany Coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson told Wyland this morning on “Big Board Sports” on Fox Sports 980. She calls WVU "super athletic."
For the men’s game tonight in Dayton, Ohio, both UAlbany and Mount St. Mary’s will play to earn the #16-seed in the NCAA tournament and the winner faces #1-overall seed Florida in Orlando on Thursday.
Both teams are making their fourth-ever March Madness appearance. Both earned a spot by coming out of nowhere to win their conference tournament. That's about where the similarities end for Mount St. Mary's (16-16) and Albany (18-14).
When the two meet tonight in the First Four at the University of Dayton, it will be a dramatic contrast in styles. The Mountaineers, champs of the Northeast Conference, like to run and pump up 3-point shots. The Great Danes, winners of the American East, prefer to pound it inside.
